Hope in Shadows Facts

- Hope and Shadows is on to its ninth annual photo contest and calendar, starting in October 2003.

- 200- plus people entered the 2011 photo contest.

- Over 4000 photos submitted from some 200- plus cameras distributed in June 2011 for the photo contest held over three days.

- This year there are 220 plus vendors. Vendors attend a training session to sell the calendar and will sell more than 15,000 calendars on the streets of Vancouver, North Vancouver and Victoria. A huge increase from prior years; compared to 1,500 sold on the streets in 2003 of the 2004 calendar.

- 17,000 copies of the 2012 calendar have been printed 

- Vendors earn half of the sales generated from the calendars. They are started with one free calendar, from there purchasing each calendar for $10 and selling for $20.

- Local residents of the Downtown Eastside have earned more than $500,000 since the beginning of the Hope in Shadows project in 2003.

- The calendar is printed locally on 100% recycled paper and is carbon neutral.

- In 2010 vendors sold a record of 13,500 calendars in Victoria and Vancouver.

- A selection of the 2011 winning photographs will be exhibited at the Havana Gallery (1212 Commercial Drive) from December 11th to January 3rd.
